Happy 3rd Birthday, Ethan Reid!

Ethan Reid,

Three years ago, we welcomed you into our family. Some of my most precious memories were created on the day you were born. I can still remember so clearly watching Gracie as she approached you for the first time, calling you “handsome” and touching you gently. I was a mother before you arrived, but on your birth day, I became a mother to my son. Since your birth, I've learned that this is a relationship unlike any other. You are an incredible little boy, and you bring laughter and happiness to each and every day.


Your personality continues to develop, but you are a child that is just so filled-to-the-brim with life and energy. You are friendly, outgoing, and affectionate. You offer your tiny hand when meeting someone new, and give the best kisses and hugs when saying good-bye. You are a joyful child, and it is contagious. You and I often visit a local retirement home, to spend time with Ms. Eileen, our former neighbor. The elderly folks just adore you and look forward to having your presence light up their day. I can already see something very special within you, something that I believe God will use some day.


You are “all boy”, as they say! You absolutely love cars, trucks, planes, construction vehicles, anything with wheels. You also love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, thanks to your cousin, Austin! You can break out into some pretty impressive ninja moves. Your daddy and I have truly had so much fun on this journey with our little boy. These past few years have been so different than Gracie's first few! Gracie was a much more reserved and cautious toddler. You are all over the place, all caution thrown to the wind. 

This has been quite an adventure thus far, and it's only the very beginning. Our family is blessed to have you, sweet boy. You have challenged me and helped me stretch and grow in all sorts of ways as a mother. You've been an incredible best buddy to your big sister and I pray that this sibling bond only grows stronger through the years. 


I wish you a happy, happy birthday. We are excited to celebrate your big day with you! I love you so, so much!!!

The end is near.

My husband is confident. He's determined, speaks his mind, and lives for a challenge. If you tell him something cannot be done, be prepared to be proven wrong. I rarely see him get nervous, for any reason... almost. My 38-week appointment was this morning. As usual, Sean and Gracie were with me, which I love. I was anxious to get to this appointment because I started having uncomfortable cramping yesterday evening, which then lasted through the night and even into the morning. I've experienced a few other "preliminary signs" of labor which have led me to believe that we're coming up on the end here. After talking with the doctor, he offered to check my progress and strip my membranes. This is when I got a little tickled, even as I was sitting on an exam table naked from the waist down, with nothing but a paper sheet wrapped around me. Hilton Head.

I was feeling heavy. Overwhelmed. Tired. The combination of sick children, sleep deprivation, and very little "me" time was starting to push me down a bit. I don't like feeling that way. I want to wake up with a smile on my face. I want to feel motivated and light . Our Hilton Head vacation arrived at the perfect time. Packing was a nightmare, but once our car hit the highway, I felt it... Freedom . It didn't matter that I was taking a sick child along, or that I was still going to be sleep deprived. Those things are easier to handle when you get a change in scenery, especially when that scenery becomes blue skies and an endless ocean. As we do each year in January, we joined Sean's dad and step-mom for a winter get-away. The weather was kind to us this year. Gracie loves the beach.
