Ethan is FIVE!

Ethan,

The sound of you laughing in your sleep woke me up at 5:30 a.m. today. I turned over to find you snuggled between your mommy and daddy, in your usual spot, with a little grin still lingering on your face. What were you dreaming of on this morning of your 5th birthday? I'd love to discover what happy things occupy your dreams, sweet boy.

At 5:39 p.m. you will "officially" turn 5 years old. I find myself hanging on to every minute that allows me to say that you are still four. Five sounds too big. It sounds like the beginning of a new chapter in childhood. It sounds like I can't claim you as a baby anymore, at all.

Happy Birthday, my sweet Ethan. My favorite boy in the whole world. My baby forever and ever, no matter how old you get. You came into this world on June 16, 2011 and perfected our family with your presence.

Now, you are a Lego-loving little boy with an incredible imagination and loads of energy. You can run, jump, and kick all day and somehow still have the ability to fight sleep at bedtime. You are loving and affectionate. You like to cuddle and you give the best hugs and kisses! Even when you are playing an iPad game or watching a show, you'll ask me to come and sit with you, just so that we are together. You've recently started calling me your "teacup mommy" because I once joked that I was fragile. I cannot even express how it warms my heart to hear you speak to me so sweetly. Playtime with your daddy is your favorite. You cannot wait until he gets home from work each evening. I have a feeling you'll be a very close father/son duo as you get older.

We have found that days spent on the boat/lake is one of the best ways to spend time together as a family.

You took this "selfie" with my phone! You were very proud of this Lego creation.

While you are mostly made up of happiness and sweetness, you also have quite a little temper, so it all balances out. :)

Other things you love:
Star Wars: You especially love the Star Wars Lego sets. Your Lego collection exceeds any collection I've seen...already.
Avengers: Again, you love the Lego characters, plus watching the movies with your dad.
Our dog, Vader: Named after Darth Vader, of course.
Your best buddy, Francis: Your little friendship is precious. You have been in the same Bible Fellowship class for a few years, but your friendship really blossomed in Mrs. Handy's 4 year old preschool class.
Gracie: You love to make each other laugh and there are times when you are the best of friends. I treasure those moments, because you also annoy each other quite a bit!

Ethan, I see in you a sweetness and gentleness that I pray you never lose. I pray for myself and your daddy as we parent you in these early years. I know you'll be a great man someday. You're a pretty awesome little boy.

I love you,
Mommy
