Mountains.

We spent the weekend in Boone, North Carolina. Our home away from home was a cozy cabin overlooking an insanely beautiful backdrop of changing leaves and mountain tops. We could literally see the definition of fall outside of each window. We didn't necessarily mean to choose the most perfect weekend for a mountain get-away, but we did choose the perfect weekend.

(Our view from the back deck.)

We were joined by one of the greatest couples I know, my childhood best friend and her husband. Katie and I have been friends for over 20 years. I think I only didn't know her for the first three years of my life. She and her husband met at, and then graduated from, Appalachian State University. It was wonderful having them show us around a town they fell in love with, while also falling in love with each other... ahhhh... so sweet. :)

The four of us began talking about this trip back in July, during our July 4th dinner date to be exact, and Gracie has been asking when we would be going to the mountains ever since. Needless to say, our little girl was not disappointed. She had an absolute blast and was already asking when we would be back to the cabin before we even left it. She is an outdoorsy girl, which doesn't surprise me, since I enjoyed a good camping trip and walk through the woods as a little girl. She loves climbing rocks, taking nature walks, and exploring new surroundings, so this was her kind of thing.

On Saturday, we were out and about the whole day exploring Boone, then Blowing Rock, where we took Gracie to a nice park to play. We ate a lot of good food (maybe a little too much...), enjoyed spending time with the little ones, stayed up way too late playing Sequence (fun game!), talking, and laughing...

One of the highlights of the weekend  for me was hanging out in the hot tub after the babies went to sleep Saturday night. It was a perfectly clear night, and everything around us was so quiet and peaceful. I'm not sure that kind of peace and quiet even exists at home. I didn't even realize how much I was missing it until I was sitting there so totally relaxed with nothing on my mind but my sleeping sweeties and our hot tub conversation. I don't think I ever shut down like that, even though it's important to do so from time to time. That was the moment I knew we would most definitely be back. :) Katie even saw a shooting star, although I was sure her gasp meant a bat was landing on my head or she spotted a bear climbing over the deck railing. It was most definitely her star to wish on, and while I don't know what she wished for, I hope it comes true.

Gracie and Duff quickly became friends... :)

Thanks to our friends for a wonderful weekend away! I'm already excited about the next time. :)

  2. What a beautiful place to spend the weekend! I am so glad your family was able to do this with your close friend. It's so neat to have a friend who you have stayed so close to for all those many years...a rare thing indeed. I am so glad you were able to have that "hot tub moment" where you could finally just relax and be totally at peace! Very much needed, I am sure, with the craziness of your day to day life! This post made me smile for you.
