18th Annual Rotary Club 4th of July Run.
Last year, Sean, the kids, and I began our July 4th celebration on the streets of downtown Kernersville. My family has enjoyed our town's annual parade for years now. Before the parade begins, however, there is a 5k race, which my mom and step-dad happened to be running in. We were so excited when we spotted Nana from our places on the sidewalk. We cheered her on, even though she was totally in her zone and didn't hear us. I joked later that I might be out there running in 2013...
Fast forward a year... I ran my first 5k race! This is an accomplishment I never saw coming. I never even ran a full mile, no walking, until a couple of months ago. But, I'm excited! I feel motivated to continue and will be signing myself (and Sean) up for another race soon! I've even been joking that there's a 10k in my future...
My mom and step-dad also ran this year. They are amazing. I was especially impressed with my mom. She won third place for her age group and beat a LOT of younger men and women, including me. :) She's my inspiration and this was such a fun experience with her way up ahead of me (I was going to say "by my side", but that would not be accurate).
The morning of the race - I was anxious to get going!
It was a rainy wait as the runners received their numbers and prepared for the race. Johnny is an awesome runner!
After the race! I survived!
I'm so so proud of you for taking on this goal, and accomplishing it! I'm right there with you - I could never run a full mile in school, and was so embarassed most of the time in front of my peers, that I started to just ask my parents to get me a doctor's note each time instead (for asthma, though I'll admit, I only had mild issues with it, and only while running). GO YOU!!! I'd love to run an event with you sometime. For some reason, once I became an adult, I outgrew most of my asthma issues and have an easier time running now than I did as a kid.
ReplyDeleteI wish we would have gotten ourselves out of the house to come cheer you on! That's amazing your Mom came in 3rd, she rocks, and is definitely an inspiration!
