Visiting Maryland.
Last Wednesday, we left for Easton, Maryland. After a 7 hour drive, we pulled into my grandmother's driveway. Even though it was well after 10 pm, both my grandmother and grandfather were wide awake and ready to greet us. Upon entering the house, Gracie and Ethan suddenly found a burst of energy that left them jumping, laughing, and dancing around the living room. They were excited, and even though I was exhausted, I danced a little on the inside, because I was excited, too. This trip is one that was postponed when we discovered Gracie had the flu at a doctor's visit the day after Christmas.
Gracie immediately took to her Great-Granny, no warm-up period necessary. They share a special bond that I'm sure began during those first nights home from the hospital after Gracie was born. Granny spent many hours holding my tiny Grace and I'd often peek in the nursery to find them lost in eye contact as Granny spoke quietly to her.
Ethan was less interested in cuddling by the fire and much more concerned with exploring this new territory. He was, however, drawn to Great-Grandpa. He would often run over to where Grandpa was sitting and show him one of his toys, or sneak away with Grandpa's cane. He spent a lot of time watching Grandpa and never hesitated to lean in for a kiss or hug before bedtime.
Watching these relationships in action warms my heart. My grandparents, who have loved me, shared with me, listened to me, laughed with me, now share similar moments with my children. It is a blessing I do not take for granted.
We had a wonderful visit, as usual. Granny fed us well, with delicious meals and desserts. She spent her time focused on the little moments with each of us. There were talks by a crackling fire that she started, bird-watching with the little ones, and a tea party, a highlight for Gracie and I. Perhaps what stays with me the most is how willingly she gives of herself to others, and how even the smallest detail receives thought. She's by far the best hostess I've ever known. Seriously, Gracie and I had crystallized pansies at our Saturday afternoon tea.
My grandfather turns 95 years old this August. He's encountered a few health scares over the past few months, but he is doing well. I know that Sean was honored to find himself engaged in technology talk with this wise, sharp man. They chatted over matching iPads. It's amazing, really. My heart leaps at such moments.

Chocolate Butterfly Wings, Mushroom Meringues, Crystallized Pansies, and Strawberry Confections - talk about elegant touches for a 4 year old's tea party!
Gracie chose the cup that Ashley used to choose as a little girl.

And since it was easier to grab my phone and discreetly photograph little moments, here are a few Instagram photos taken during our visit:
Men and their toys... ;)
No matter the season or weather, there is always a beautiful view to behold.
The best chocolate cake in the entire world.
5 o'clock martinis by the fire. Classic.
Couldn't come to Granny's house without our Cinderella dress!

What precious grandparents you have! I know I've said it before, but wow to your grandmother's cooking! That is so invaluable how much thought and time she put into creating those special little moments that you and Gracie will remember forever! I'm so glad you all were able to get up there for a visit, and your grandparents seem like such special people!
